  • Tom King fans continue defending his terrible takes and stories in the DC Comics universe. King is currently writing the worst Wonder Woman comic is recent memory and certainly his worst series at DC Comics. But King fans claim this is the greatest Wonder Woman series ever, despite never reading Wonder Woman before. Wonder Woman #10 is the last example of just how terrible this run is. Wes and Jim review Wonder Woman #10 and question how any comic book fan can still support him or the series. Tom King is writing the worst Wonder Woman comic of all-times.

    Why can't they just give her more fun stories about Olympic mythology? Wonder Woman needs just entertaining fantasy adventures

    • @naquangreen2192
      @naquangreen2192 Месяц назад +4

      @DavidMartinez-ce3Ip
      "Why can't they just give her more fun stories about Olympic mythology"
      Because in the past decade or a half Olympic/Greek mythology has been dragged through the dirt and demonize by Western culture with many of the Greek pantheon and Greek Heroes being made to look bad/worse and questionable 🤦‍♂️
      I mean it's true to an extent that Greek mythology is very very hard to get into especially with the contrast between morality of the modern world and of the ancient world of the Olympians
      A lot of the Greek gods goddesses and "Heroes" were really horrible people that did a lot of horrible things and the term hero during ancient times was very very different compared to modern times
      Why is it that every time we get a movie, TV show or video game that is about the Greek pantheon that they have to inject modern Western influences and heroic idealism onto ancient Greek characters. Because it would be hard to sell the greek olympians God's goddesses and demigod humans in their original mythological morality and ideology 😒
      Comic book writers have been trying to separate WW character from the Greek pantheon in many different ways because of the questionable mythology surrounding it.

    • @naquangreen2192

      @DavidMartinez-ce3Ip
      Another problem that I think that persists when it comes to WW comics and her character is again as Wes pointed out is that Wonder Woman doesn't have a very interesting rogue's gallery of villains
      Even if that has been proven not to be true due to decades worth of comics and her having other villains outside of just Cheetah
      However a lot of modern comic writers or just writers in general aren't really interested in using any of WW's rogues gallery of villains and choose to fall back on cheetah and the God of War Aries 🤦‍♂️
      Because they don't want to put any of the effort into writing any of her other villains either due to a lack of interest or a lack of ideas on how to modernize/reimagine those characters for a modern audience and fanbase
      I also think from my previous discussion it's due to the questionable mythology surrounding the Olympians and Greek myths in general
      Even though the Greek gods and goddesses in DC comics Wonder Woman history are very very different than how they are depicted in IRL and are a lot less messed up
      However I feel that like a lot of other books WW was ruined by the N52 as the WW comic from back then wanted to bring in a lot of the messed up IRL Greek mythology and origins to the comics.

      @naquangreen2192 Marvel took Thor and Norse mythology and made it fun. Don't need to be accurate to the original myths. People want fun fantasy adventures. No political BS or edginess. Just fun pure fantasy. There's a huge market for that even now. Plenty of ways to reinvent Olympic mythology in a successful and fun way like Disney's Hercules or the Percy Jackson books.

I remember the first few arcs, everyone thought it was really good and Tom King was doing something deep. When he had Bruce eating a burger with a fork and knife, that was pretty much when I realized that Tom King was writing himself as Batman. Like he does with every male character. Every female character is written as his mommy-wife.

    One of the big problems with modern entertainment is that the modern writers do not understand the importance of verisimilitude in storytelling and world building. To keep one's audience invested in your story and your characters, they must be able to suspend their disbelief, and it is the good writer that makes it easier for the audience to do so. There is nothing worse than immersing yourself deeply into a story, only to have the writer pull you out again with a lack of story consistency or verisimilitude. This is even more important in fantastical genres such as Superheroes, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy. These story archetypes are already quite fantastic and, as such, keeping them somewhat grounded is very important. Today, though, to excuse their poor writing and storytelling skills, modern writers will defend their inconsistent stories by saying, "There are heroes that fly and deflect bullets, and your quibble is the make up of the flora and fauna of an island?" It's lazy writing and bad storytelling. It's also narcissism and selfishness (how many writers today talk about, "Telling the story I want to tell," while working within the framework of someone else's well established world?). And all of this is why continuity and canon matter. Thanks Wes and Jim for the excellent discussion.

      I guess it just shows that after soo many world/universe ending crisis events that a war between Amazons and the US isn't the worst thing that they have dealt with or have seen specially having dealt with the likes of Darkseid and the Anti-monitor
      Wonder Woman and the Wonder girls being as laid-back and chill as they are in Tom King's WW points to the characters not really being all that concerned since they've dealt with much much worse 🤷‍♂️
      Be that as it may, personally think it's just because the sovereign, Amanda Waller and the US aren't really all that intimidating or threatening as villains
      Especially since Tom King doesn't seem all that interested in making them come across as pure evil since the characters in question are all American and that Tom King himself is an American and former CIA etc.

    There's only been one "King" of comics that I ever heard of, and his name wasn't Tom. It was Jack.
    No really though, I only read his Batman run on the recommendation of a good friend, and I think he must have sold that on that first story, with the brother and sister who traded their life for superpowers. That was a really solid story, especially the moment Alfred goes out in a Batsuit to distract the end villain for a moment. My god, that man earned his paycheck. But as I read on I saw less and less as a long term Batman fan that I approved of, but the good parts carried it until the awful wedding story. Even having it spoiled well ahead of time, I couldn't make sense of it from a storyteller's perspective, and that was when I wrote Tom King off as "talented but too misguided for it to matter".

    Try to be a little objective here. I mean look at how you guys sound:
    Just because you don't like this, you're saying that only Tom Kings fans would like this, despite it being in the top 5 selling DC comics. This means that it's holding past the first issue bump.
    Just because you don't like Tom King, you say that Tom King fans aren't Wonder Woman or DC comic fans. That's a crazy generalization.
    You say its the worst Wonder Woman comic in recent memory when it's selling better than any recent Wonder Woman run (I don't know how you can think this is worse than Cloonan).
    You're saying it's the worst title in DC when it's one of the best selling ones.
    You're saying that this should be Daniel Sampere's breakout work. It obviously is because outside this bubble, people acknowledge this is doing well. Or at least better than most of DC's other books.
    You're ignoring facts and treating those with a different opinion as lesser fans.
    Don't get me wrong. I don't think this is the best Wonder Woman run of all time, certainly not better than Perez or Rucka, but I do think it's better than any Wonder Woman run that we've had in a long time.
    I've been a comic book fan for over 30 years and Wonder Woman is one of my top 3 DC characters alongside Batman and Hal Jordan, and I really don't think this run is that bad at all. It's one of the very very few titles that I'm happy buying from the big 2.
    Despite how it sounds, I'm not a Tom King superfan. I like some of his work and I dislike some. For the most part I think he's fine. He's not as good as older writers (no one is) but I think he's better than the majority of DC's current crop of modern writers.
    You have some good points here. The story does feel a bit disconnected due to King being too focused on trying to explore Diana's character. The Sovereign stuff almost seems like a backdrop. However your good points are being overshadowed by the nitpicky BS like asking how she got to the island (when it states clearly she was taken to the island because Sovereign believes that Cheetah might be able to break her) or asking why she fights when she's hungry or why Yara sounds like Tarzan (she doesn't for the most part). Like some of these complaints seem like you're just looking for something to complain about. If you were this nitpicky about Green Lantern and took things out of context, I'm sure you'd find a lot of faults there too.

    Tom King depiction of Brazilian Wonder Woman seems extremely offensive.
    Most Brazilians speak Portuguese. (similar to Spanish). No Tarzan speak.
    Portuguese is Brazil's National language for hundreds of years.
    There are some native language only tribes, like US Native Americans. Again, no Tarzan speak.
    In Idaho, many people speak English very well.
    FYI, Idaho has some US Native Americans, Mexicans, Basque.
    The Tarzan Speck is highly offensive. You think Tom King would
    be progressive enough to know that?

    I have to agree, completely. I used to be a Tom King disciple, but... over the past several years (and endless mini- and maxi-series), he has revealed himself to be, truly, one of the most profoundly disappointing comic book writers ever. Almost 100% of the time, the initial premise (and the number 1 issue) are extremely enticing and exciting... and, then, without fail, 100% of the books turn into unreadable, meandering, pointless, self-indulgent dreck by issue 3, at best. It is crushingly frustrating. At this point, Wonder Woman-- which started out phenomenally-- reads worse than if DC were to just publish 32 pages of literal Tom King masturbation selfies. Issue 9 was impossible to get through. And this issue was an absolute joke. I can't believe I read this far into the series. I will never get that time or money back. But I can say, without any hesitation, that I will never read another Tom King series, ever again-- no matter what people say about it. No one is more sad or angry about this than me. This guy has had endless opportunities to give fans groundbreaking takes/stories.... and he's failed almost 100% of the time. Even going back and looking at Mister Miracle (or any other series that he wrote before his fall), it only seemed amazing at the time because we'd never read anything like it before. Now we know the truth. He believes he's the most clever, original, insightful writer alive-- and it shows-- but he actually has nothing to say; and he certainly doesn't have any idea how to craft a compelling story (especially for this medium). It's all just been him gazing lustfully at his own reflection, recycling the same, tired, non-ideas over and over and over. And I'm done.

    The only characters I think Tom King has damaged are Angle Man, who he ironically brought back, and Silver Swan. I guess there could be an argument for Grail, but I think the New Gods as a whole have been damaged since Jack Kirby stopped writing them. There does need to be some general cleanup after King is gone, or preferably before King leaves the book. Why are the amazons of any tribe invoking Hera's name in a positive way at this point? The very last arc was Hera trying to depopulate Themyscira! After all three tribes unified under Themyscira's queen Nubia no less! It's not like Hera apologized or even gracefully accepted her defeat either. She vowed to try again!
    What's Yara Flor going on about Diana being too arrogant for a side kick? Yara WAS Diana's side kick during Hera's war on humanity. If Diana doesn't want Yara around now, well that's justified too since Yara is the one who convinced Diana to go talk to Hera. It's really on Diana for taking the idiot's advice instead of trusting her better judgment, but Diana has human emotions so it's perfectly reasonable for Diana to associate Yara with suffering and have an aversion to further partnerships. Why is Donna Troy bold enough to ask anything of her sister after refusing to cooperate with the investigation into their mother's murder? How did Amazons Attack happen in this world where the Olympians weren't kidnapped the New Gods? Where Circe doesn't have a daughter to lose? Where The Bana-Mighdall had not migrated to Themyscira? '
    How did Grail get out of prison. What's the deal with Anglette now? Is Lyta Trevor ever going to be a thing this time around?

    It’s just Diana and Barbara fighting each other for days before they reconciled and saved each other. Also, even though Diana and Barbara encountered each other since the late ‘80s, they don’t personally know each other. At least we get to see a mentioning of Pricilla Rich (whose pre-Crisis Earth-Two self last appeared in the first Crisis and whose pre-Crisis Earth-One/New Earth/Prime Earth self died) and Deborah Domaine (who was cured by Diana off-panel after the first Crisis). Same thing with Tom King continuing Barbara’s redemption since the forgettable and bad Cloonrad run. Also, Diana still saying, “No Thank You,” to have a modern and memorable catchphrase like Superman and Batman. Meanwhile, we have the Wonder Girls (Donna, Cassie, and Yara) going on the Invisible Plane to rescue Diana. I like that they want to save Diana while having a friendly banter. The missed opportunity should’ve involved them talking to each other about how they became Wonder Girl, join the superhero teams, deal with romantic relationships and continuity problems, and team ups with Diana. Also, Yara is practically Diana’s Robin because sharing mantles and having a sibling bond. Overall, this comic is okay at best.
    For the Super Sons backup, I thought it was wholesome for Jon and Damian to teach Lizzie how to fly a kite. Also, Jon telling Damian to learn about humility as an old chum because Damian is vengeance and night and Kite Man (Hell Yeah!) teaching Lizzie how to fly a kite. Overall, this is a good and wholesome backup!

    11:38- “…did we betray our heritage and surrender?!” What is this character even on about? I’m guessing this is supposed to be one of those “villain wraps himself in the American flag and acts like he’s defending some great principle to trick people” deals (Think Kingpin in Daredevil: Born Again), but either Tom King tried to make a grandiose villain speech & failed or he tried to satirize people who think they’re making grandiose speeches & failed.

    • @VaughnEsper
      @VaughnEsper Месяц назад

      I dont think he has writers block. I think he has a concept that he wants to explore, but it makes the actual super hero stories be relegated to the background. With Wonder Woman, it seems he's trying to explore different aspects of her character and the Sovereign story is just a backdrop to that. With Batman, he wanted to bring him to his lowest point and then have him rise back up to show that he's a person who will never give up.
      These concepts are interesting to him so that's his main focus, for good or bad. I think that's why he's so polarizing. Some people like the concepts he explores and other people don't care for it.
